Adoption Counselor

Seeking a professional dedicated to animal welfare that enjoys variety and flexibility in a job. Must have excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with the public, strong customer service and counseling skills. Must be a team player and work well with others, as well as be able to work independently. Must be able to work in and enjoy a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of animal care and behavior is required. Must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work nights and weekends.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Qualify and counsel potential adopters applying to adopt cats, dogs and small companion animals.
  • Conduct behavior evaluations on dogs to determine adoptability.
  • Work with animals that may need additional assessment and/or behavior modification.
  • Conduct pre-adoption consultations with potential dog adopters and follow-up support.
  • Develop and present training to shelter staff/volunteers on a variety of animal-related subjects.
  • Respond to Behavior Helpline emails from pet owners seeking advice.
  • Coordinate spay/neuter of shelter animals.
  • Create promotional materials for local businesses or shelter events to advertise adoptable animals.
  • Coordinate and attend events to promote AWLA & our animals.
  • Develop creative, new ideas to promote adoption of shelter animals.
  • Manage, stock and organize retail section.
  • Work assigned hours at the front desk interacting with the public on a variety of levels.
  • Update and maintain adoption handouts and materials.
  • Administrative tasks including copying and re-stocking front desk materials, filing contracts, making adoption folders, and data entry.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • College Degree (BA or BS) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of dog behavior/handling skills preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Basic computer skills necessary.
  • Must be physically able to handle high energy and/or large breed dogs.
  • Flexibility in schedule with ability to work evenings and weekends.
