Animal Shelter Volunteers
Volunteers play a critical role at the League. Without our volunteers, we would never be able to provide the current level of programs and services to assist the animals and the community. We estimate that the numbers of hours our volunteers give to us equals approximately seven full-time staff positions. There are numerous programs and activities in need of your energy and talents as detailed on the application.

Volunteer Requirements
You must be 18 years old to volunteer. The League does allow junior volunteers to assist their parents in various volunteer opportunities. You may request a volunteer application by calling 703-931-9241 x 200 or e-mail volunteer@awla.org. Please mail, fax or bring completed applications to the League. Click here for the fax number and address. All applicants are required to attend an orientation which covers the League's policies and philosophy. Some assignments may also require additional training.
Volunteer Orientation
Orientations are held quarterly, usually on a Saturday. Applicants are invited to orientation and training sessions based on the volunteer opportunities selected on the application.
Minimum Time Requirements for Volunteers
We ask that you give a one-year volunteer commitment to the League. Some programs have minimum hourly requirements which are indicated in the descriptions on the application.
Junior Volunteers
Being a Junior Volunteer is a great way to develop respect and compassion for living creatures.
Children under 18 may volunteer for certain assignments, as specified on the application, if they are accompanied by a parent. The parent must complete all volunteer requirements, including submission of an application and attendance at an orientation. Parent and child must also complete any additional required training.
Volunteer Foster Parent Program
We often have a special need for fosterers. Find out more about the volunteer foster program.
Wildlife Aid Brigade
A new wildlife initiative called the Wildlife Aid Brigade is being launched in the Metro DC area this spring. The project will involve volunteers interested in directly helping wild animals.
