AWLA Helps Keep Your Pet Healthy & Safe
Vaccines and microchips are essential tools to protect your pet. Vaccines help prevent serious diseases, keeping your pet healthy and ensuring they can safely interact with other animals. Microchips provide a permanent form of identification, increasing the chances of a lost pet being reunited with their family.
AWLA offers affordable wellness services, including low-cost vaccine clinics and microchip checks, to help keep your pet protected. Learn more about our services below.

Check The Chip Program
At AWLA, we’re committed to helping ensure your pet is always safe and protected. Our Check the Chip program allows you to easily verify that your pet's microchip is registered and up-to-date.
How It Works:
- Visit Us Anytime During Business Hours: Simply stop by the shelter with your pet during our normal business hours. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrier.
- Free Microchip Scanning: We’ll scan your pet’s microchip to confirm it’s registered in the national database.
- Free Registration: If your pet’s microchip isn’t currently registered, we’ll register it for you — at no cost!
Microchips are a simple and effective way to reunite lost pets with their families. By ensuring that your pet’s microchip is properly registered, you help improve the chances of being reunited if your pet ever goes missing.
Don’t wait — visit us today to Check the Chip and give your pet the best chance of being returned to you if they’re lost.

More Info About Vaccines & Microchips
Rabies Vaccines
Rabies is a fatal disease that affects both pets and people, but it is entirely preventable with vaccination. Virginia law requires that all dogs and cats four months of age and older have a current rabies vaccine.
Distemper Vaccines
The DHPP vaccine - Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus - is commonly referred to as the distemper vaccine. It is a combo vaccine that protects against all four of the diseases in its name.
Microchips
A microchip is a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, that provides permanent identification for your pet. It is implanted under the skin and contains a unique ID number that can be scanned by a vet or shelter. This number is linked to your contact information, helping reunite you with your pet if they ever get lost.
