13-year-old Boo came to AWLA for a temporary stay through our H.E.L.P. program when her beloved owner was too ill to care for her. We hoped Boo could return to her owner when she was better but, facing a difficult prognosis, Boo’s owner made the heartbreaking decision to surrender her to us permanently.
It was clear from the start that Boo wasn’t feeling her best. She was underweight, her coat was greasy, and something just seemed…off. Tests revealed that she was suffering from hyperthyroidism, which results in weight loss, increased appetite, increased thirst and urination, and unkempt, greasy fur. Typically, this condition is managed with daily medication, so we began treatment right away. But for Boo, the medication took a toll on her health, leading to liver complications that left her feeling even sicker.
The only option left for Boo was a specialized treatment called radio-iodine. It’s a lifesaving procedure, but it’s also a costly one, requiring extensive pretreatment exams, bloodwork, and hospital care. Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, we didn’t hesitate – Boo got the care she needed. After a stay at the hospital, Boo moved into a foster home with someone who lovingly managed her recovery. In just a few weeks, Boo was cleared by our veterinarian and declared cured. Soon after, an amazing couple looking to adopt a senior kitty welcomed Boo into their home, where she’s now enjoying her golden years surrounded by love.
