The Arlington County Board issued a proclamation today to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA), which declares the month of November, Animal Welfare League of Arlington Shelter Appreciation Month. This declaration coincides with National Animal Shelter Appreciation week, November 3-9, 2013.
“Arlington County has had a long commitment to the humane treatment of animals in partnership with the Animal Welfare League of Arlington,” said Jay Fisette, vice chair Arlington County Board. “With its innovative programs and tireless advocacy efforts AWLA operates as one of the top open admission shelters in Virginia exceeding national standards and serving as a model for other animal shelters throughout the Commonwealth,” said Fisette.
“It is gratifying to be recognized by the County for our animal welfare efforts. We strive everyday to protect vulnerable animals as well as to find loving and permanent homes for all companion animals in our community,” said Neil Trent, president and CEO, Animal Welfare League of Arlington. “It is because of Arlington County residents and individuals throughout the D.C. metro area who share in our mission, that we are able to increase our efforts, better serve the community and improve the lives of animals,” said Trent.
Whether it is a commitment to adopt an animal or simply sharing a Facebook post, there are several ways the public can demonstrate their support for Animal Shelter Appreciation Month :
- Party for a purpose! Show your support and attend the first-ever Golden Paw Gala on Saturday, November 2nd at the Westin Arlington Gateway. The glitzy benefit will support AWLA shelter, programs and services. For details and to purchase tickets visit, www.awla.org.
- Become a Foster – The shelter can be a stressful environment and some animals just need a break. AWLA is seeking individuals or families that can temporarily open their home to an animal in need of fostering. AWLA provides foster training and covers all expenses associated with caring for a foster animal, including feeding and medical expenses.
- Spread the Word – Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and share stories of our adoptable dogs through social media to increase awareness and help find them homes.
Donate -The League relies on financial contributions, as well as wish items to enrich the lives of animals during their stay at AWLA or at-risk animals in the community. Money can be allocated by the donor to either a general fund or low-cost spay/neuter fund, the Woody and Mickey Healthy Pet fund, Ross-Roberts Emergency Veterinary Fund or the Bob Ragan Humane Education Fund.
Earlier this year the Virginia General Assembly issued a resolution in honor of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s (AWLA) efforts to operate one of the top open admission shelters in Virginia and for implementing programs to ensure that over 90 percent of its cats and dogs leave the facility. This exceeds national standards.
